Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

This raises an interesting thought, I am about to reach my 35 years of NI contributions , with around 14 years being voluntary contributions. Should I continue contributing to reduce my WEP exposure?

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

If you are thinking of contributing another 30 something years, remember the UK Government has moved the goal posts many times on pensions.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

It may be worth noting social security is based on average earnings over the last 35 years as far as I know. WEP disappears after 30 years.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/wep.html

Delaying retirement increased the reduction for WEP from $395.50 to $522.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

That is how I read it also. The way I read it, is that if you immigrate to the US after age 32, your SS will have WEP applied , even if you work more than 30 years.
Immigrate age 38, you need to...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

This is sort of good to know. It looks like I am going to lose a big chuck (45%) of social security. This could influence where I can afford to retire.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

So it occurred to me, if I am working between 62 and 67, should I claim SSI at age 62? Would the increased deferred payment be more than the 8% if you just defer claiming until age 67. Five years of...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security
