Re: The world of automation

Not that much point in arguing the issue. I have no more knowledge than most of us on this except I've been following it for several decades - in fact I was a "subject" in TRRL, Bracknell, studies...

Re: The world of automation

Probably me, some time ago!

I would doubt that driverless cars are "about to trial" in London - or anywhere else for that matter.

If you mean "autonomous cars with a driver who is the...

Re: The world of automation

Absolutely! There's an enormous amount of hubris surrounding the driverless car industry.

There is a huge difference between a car that can drive itself ANYWHERE - across fields if necessary, or...

Re: The world of automation

Actually, autopilots are a lot smarter than your post implies - and that's quite a lot of the problem! They have so many modes and combinations of modes that when things start to get complicated...

Re: The world of automation

For those still saying the autonomous vehicles and robotaxis are a decades off.

Re: The world of automation

I agree about the fact checks, particularly in this case because there are so many assumptions made on both sides.

For example, do they take into account those who charge their EVs from their own...

Re: The world of automation

RTFQ! Scenario - a big truck gets stuck on a small roundabout. No driver. traffic jam builds up - people start getting antsy. Nearest operative who can take over the truck is a hundred miles away....

Re: The world of automation

You must be delusional if you imagine that "remote handling" would ever be acceptable on public roads, with a traffic jam around a stranded truck and fistfights starting all over! In any case, those...

Re: The world of automation

I can't work out if you are being serious or not

Always the "once" and "maybe". It's one thing to have huge trucks running iron ore around on an opencast mine - but what happens when a truck...

Re: The world of automation

That's exactly the point: unless they can go literally anywhere they are useless. With a "safety" driver, OK (perhaps) but then what's the point?

Re: The world of automation

The issue is probably not whether they can negotiate traffic, unexpected drivers' behaviour etc, but whether they can do all this all the time.If there are say areas that they won't work in or which...

Re: The world of automation

That's not the way I read it: it appears to say that when the car was on full autonomy the drivers brake pedal was programmed to be inoperative - presumably because the system was so infallible.
