You'd need an inline fuse on each leg. You don't have a neutral like you would in the UK, but in fact two 110v legs with, maybe, a neutral (older homes omitted the neutral altogether)! In the US, to...

To illustrate my point, let me share a story.
My old barn was wired by the previous owner. They used a 30 amp single pole breaker on a circuit that fed some outdoor lights; They used 12 gauge wire...

Herein lies a problem. US plugs are not fused. Most stove outlets are going to be 40 or 50 amps, and dryers 30 amp. That being said, the breaker protecting the outlet will be rated at either 30, 40...
