How long ago were you in Auckland? There is a motorway all the way to the airport. Additionally the new government will be building light rail to the airport.

Melbourne is a large Australian city, Sydney is a large international city.

I find Melbourne too parochial, it's best attributes are events, bars, restaurants and it's still reasonably priced....
