I'm not in favour of hiring a lawyer normally either but I have a couple of observations based on my own experience and, although it's for Canada, I don't imagine that country is alone in not always...

Not to mention that the "unwelcome" spouse could be the carer for the Brit, thus saving the country a fortune in caring costs.

Or where the returnee would be coming back to be carer for someone...

Putting aside the sheer callousness of you not thinking the health of a Brit's family being important, do these new rules mean those satisfying them will have to pay for their medical treatment?

I have a recollection of something back in Thatcher's time that effectively restricted only non-white spouses of Brits.
