Re: Useful French Phrases

This took a few moments for the penny to drop. In fact I don't believe it's a common expression as I've certainly never heard it said in public. From what I recall it's more of a familiar,...

Re: Useful French Phrases

DMU reminds me that some of these faux amis can be deadly embarrasing if used incorrectly.

Re: Useful French Phrases

BB as you tend to go looking for idiomatic uses of language, look no further. Try these:
So you’re in a French bar. It’s loud, but you can make out what people are saying.

i) You hear a fellow...

Re: Useful French Phrases

BB, thanks for the DeepL link.
I wasn't familiar with it before, but could prove useful in future. Having said that DeepL and also a few other free on-line translators I've just tried (Reverso/World...

Re: Useful French Phrases

Have just been getting up to date with the latest news of the 'Westminster wallies', aka the Brexit fiasco. There were 2 phrases which caught my eye and especially raised a smile in the google...

Re: Useful French Phrases

Here's something that may result in a much needed smile from DMU, and hopefully others.

I came across this yesterday - an interesting phrase, even if not really 'useful' as per the thread title....

Re: Useful French Phrases

NTR is indeed the US military aviation term for 'nothing to report'. It's a long time since I worked on UK military or civil aircraft, and I honestly cannot remember if NTR is a term used in aircraft...

Re: Useful French Phrases

Another that I really like - and use when the occasion arises, is 'Pedaler dans la choucroute', which many of you have probably heard, meaning pedal through the sauerkraut , for something or someone...

Re: Useful French Phrases

In the AppleMac world, as it's multicoloured, it's often referred to as the 'Spinning Beachball of Death', or more frequently just 'Spinning Beachball'. Until recently I experienced it on a 16...

Re: Useful French Phrases

No, Mme TP hadn't heard of it either, and didn't know the meaning.
Not a word I would use, and yes it does sound particularly pretentious. Some may love it (I know Bernard Pivot and Fabrice Luchini...

Re: Useful French Phrases

I agree DMU, the expression "c'est chouette" although still heard, has been largely overtaken by "c'est cool". But the former is now generally regarded as ringard; there was a cringe-worthy song in...
