Once you become a tax resident in Canada, that is taxed at your marginal rate.
So you don't get to keep it all.

It is not going to make a whole lot of difference going through £ as you are affected by buy and sell rates and the two are pretty closely tied. Easiest to use an FX house to do the transaction, like...

They work fine for us, we use them frequently. FX houses are not investment advisor's, what bid you put in is your choice. Never had them make recommendations, they indicate just tell you past...

You can however transfer you GBP from the HSBC account to Custom House and they do the exchange and likely a better rate.

Royal Bank were 1.9796 this morning. Could also try Custom House currency exchange. Some banks will hold funds, depends on how long you have been with them and your standing with the institution.

Why not just deposit a UK cheque into a Canadian bank account? Banks have been known to negotiate rates when told what an FX broker has quoted and match it.

RBC give quite good rates for VIP account holders paying in UK cheques. Also Custom House Exchange across Canada offer FX services and you can book a rate with them, which the banks won't do....
