Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I only write to add my experience, the WEP people are very slow to respond. We wrote back and forth over the course of three years, they took eighteen months to reply to my last submission, where I...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes, agreed, it’s important to try to comply. I feel that by responding to their questionnaires several times, I’ve done all I can.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I’m 69, I started to receive my SS benefits at age 64, and my British State Pension at age 68. (I got a really substantial increase in the British one by deferring three years.)

Over the last...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I'd seriously advise the book I mentioned a couple of posts back. It's available from Amazon in either UK or US. I think about £18. It really goes into all the options and explains the history of...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

(Well, I do have Part B.)

The Medicare site is a good start. I feel the ultimate reference source is Medicare For Dummies. A new edition came out just a month ago. It's 432 pages long! Yes,...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Because the Advantage plan has an annual out-of-pocket max (albeit high.) Traditional Medicare (if no supplement plan is taken) has a risk of limitless copayments under certain circumstances. See...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Pt. A - $0 (Because I've worked the requisite number of years.)
Pt. B - Was about $105 per month, not sure if it still is ...
Advantage Plan - $0 (and this includes drug coverage.)

Why is my...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Exactly, I'm not sure. If in a few years I choose to upgrade and get a Medicare supplement plan plus a pt. D, would my prior coverage with Advantage mean no penalty for not having a pt. D previously?

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Well that's certainly true. When I was choosing plans two or three years ago, I had little to go on - I wasn't then, and am not now, on any medications, so I had no real life scenarios to compare. ...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes but that's a bit more peripheral than Pt. B. For instance, I have a Medicare Advantage plan, $0 premium. Medicare Advantage covers Pt. D, I believe you can't have a Pt.D plan if you have...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Good question, I should have explained it better. You only pay a penalty if, at some time in the future, you belatedly take up Medicare Pt. B. Example; you reach age 65. You don't want to pay a...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Exactly. I pay my Medicare Pt. B every month. Now, in my case, I spend maybe seven months a year in the UK and five months (or so) in the US. But even if I'd fully relocated to Britain, I think...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Thanks for that link! I'll read it. In terms of state pension age, my pension age is 65 and I reached it on by birthday in August 2015. That's what I meant by grandfathering (maybe I used the term...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I'm 67, and I haven't starting taking my British State Pension yet. I'd planned on starting to take it next year or the year after - can one continue to defer it beyond age 70? If that's the case,...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I'm in that position. I'm getting my US SS but I'm still deferring my British state pension. The good people at the SS send me a form letter every few months, "are you taking your foreign pension...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Ah yes, of course. For some reason I was only thinking in the opposite direction. But wouldn't the limited amount of US SS then be subject to WEP?

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I believe you won't get anything from the US SS, as you need a minimum of 40 credits, ten years, to qualify for SS. As for the US UK agreement, that would have helped you if you needed your UK...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

This is true. I assume that the person you spoke to on the phone was confused, mixed up your situation with that of a U.S. citizen who had lived abroad for several years, and does indeed have a...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I certainly think the word "windfall" in WEP is unfortunate, and borderline insulting. I don't like WEP either, my wife and I are both subject to it, in my case because of the British State Pension,...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes, it's a good question, does the IRS share with the SS information about the taxpayers who've declared a British State Pension on their tax return?

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Some government employers participate in Social Security, some don't, and have their own systems instead. For instance, state employees in Massachusetts (town, school district, county, state) don't...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I'm in England now, but according to my wife, they dated the payment December 31 2015, so we have to deal with it this year. They withheld tax. They sent a 1099 I assume. We'll simply enter the...

I'm 65 and already get my US SS, I plan to start getting my British state pension when I'm 66, that is, after deferring for one year. Do I have to approach the British authorities for the required...
