As I understand it Germany has numerous both public and private insurance companies. So it's not a single payer like the NHS.
That average contribution being around 14% of salary.

Well that's the way most countries do it, Germany, Switzerland, Japan to name a few. Private insurance heavily regulated by the government. Personally I'm fine with that, lets get Obama in and see if...

I never thought of myself as a rugged individualist, but I'm self employed have my own small business with one employee. I pay 100% of my own insurance, no 401K, no retirement pension.
