Re: Exchange rate

bsmith - I'm not sure that I'm following you. I'm not touting for business if thats what you're suggesting. I was offering an opinion based on first-hand personal experience of having made the move....

Re: Exchange rate

Well said! It isn't about money is it? Somehow I think that becomes obvious once you're here but people who haven't made the move yet can't seem to forget about the money and focus on the new life.

Re: Exchange rate

Have you considered it may be a deliberate strategy? Perhaps their hope is that UK exports and labour rates will become incredibly cheap compared to other developed nations. Soon other countries will...

Re: Exchange rate

Well I'm not going to try and predict the future but at least based on past data (to the end of Sept 08) house prices in Halifax seem to have bucked the trend and increased nearly 11% during the...

Re: Exchange rate

LOL

Thats quite a swing though isnt it? 2.05 down to 1.94 in a few days. I dare say it represents a missed window of opportunity for those that had been holing out for 2.06!

Re: Exchange rate

Generally 3 things affect the rate:

1 - price of oil. If oil goes down (like it has done in the last few days) thats bad for Canada but good for UK, therefore GBP gets stronger against CAD

2 -...

Re: Exchange rate

For what its worth I think there's a lot of sense talked here. As much as I dont want it to be true either I have to agree that the glory days are probably going to be over for now. Over the last...

Re: Exchange rate

No disrespect to cneldred intended here but the reality is that people who are FSA certified, have worked in finance all their lives, or are considered financial experts actually have no more insight...

Re: Exchange rate

I would imagine that if you look back over the entirity of this thread around 90% of the predictions (probably mine included) turned out to be completely wrong. Being wrong more often than being...

Re: Exchange rate

Nothing much going on with the Canadian dollar really - its the Pound thats getting hammered and thats taken the rate back down below 2.00. If you look at the GBP/USD rate that too has taken a...

Re: Exchange rate

Did you know you can "book" a rate for a future date? Its called a forward rate. You get slightly less than the current rate (called "spot rate"). Definitely dont do it unless you know for sure you...

Re: Exchange rate

For what its worth, here is my prediction on where exchange rates will go (and fyi I'm not an "expert" but I've been right a couple of times in the past)...

There is some real concern in Canada at...

Re: Exchange rate

Yeah, I should have added that you do need to tell them the amount and assuming its 10k or more tell the branch (or call centre) to phone through to their FX department to get you a "special rate"....

Re: Exchange rate

Taking into account the fundamentals of both Candian and UK economies I personally dont think we will see a return to 2.30's for a very long time. My personal prediction is that the UK housing market...

Re: Exchange rate

I dont mean to be depressing but I think the rise to $2.08 was a bit of a blip and it is back on its downward track. If you are waiting for it to go back up before you exchange then I wouldnt bank on...

Re: Exchange rate

Yeah but you probably did do the right thing though if you moved some money accross. A good currency specialist will always tell you to exchange funds in stages, not all at once, to spread the risk....

Re: Exchange rate

its called a "forward rate" (as opposed to a "spot rate"). the rate you get will be slightly lower as they are factoring in the interest cost of the money until you exchange (effectively you are...

I see its down to 1.95 today (which means you would actually get 1.93 or 1.94 something). I personally think we may see it dip into...
