I don't see how it's in poor taste. It's a perfectly reasonable option. Thousands of people have one every day. If it was an unplanned pregnancy then it's probably preferable to bringing an unwanted...

As far as I understand it, at this stage it's a fairly trivial procedure - unless you've got religious concerns. Without getting into too much detail I assume this wasn't a complete surprise?

Sounds to me like your visa would have been better off going to a family that actually wanted to move to Canada.
