I think you have been lucky. I am constantly amazed at the lack of support provided by many companies to new arrivals. So many are just left to work everything out for themselves.

Why is suggesting that the military 'hand holds' daft? If someone moves overseas with the forces, accommodation is either found or provided and you get support with legalities and have no issues...
