Your boy IS a British Citizen as long as you were also born in the UK. The passport will be proof of this but not having a passport doesn't mean that he isn't British.

Since 2001, if you're an Italian citizen and apply for British citizenship, you do not need to advise the Italians that you've also become a Brit citizen.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Unfortunately there is no cure for being Scottish and the only relief from the pain is death.
