Snikpoh, There is a way of making voluntary contributions to Social Security system through subscribing to a " convenio especial". There´s a reference to it on the British Embassy website here;

My mistake - I should have made it clear that this only applies to people who have at some point been affiliated to the Spanish Social Security system.:o

Private cover may be the simplest way to go. However, given the circumstances you describe there are couple of options for access to the public health system.
