Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It seems like an exceptionally generous definition of rental income. In fact, it's not a definition of income at all, it's a definition of "gross receipts". It would be like counting a self-employed...

Dates on most cameras "prove" nothing given most allow you to set the current date to almost anything you like.

This isn't a Medicare thread and I'd hate to see it become one, but... Medicare has had prescription drug coverage since '06. By my rough calculation, you'd have to spend over $130k a year on drugs...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I'm also intrigued by the implication that retirees don't pay income taxes.

He is being discriminated against on the basis of his nationality, not his - or alternatively - your sex.

Why do you assume that it's always the woman - or indeed anybody - that takes other...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Although I strongly disagree with this law, I don't think it's sexist. The main bread-winner could also be a non-citizen and female, and the same rules would apply. Additionally, your husband could...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

My complete opposition to these new rules has been made clear in this thread. But I disagree on the EU side of things. It's a two way street:- many Britons move to Spain, for example, and I bet most...

formula hasn't provided anything constructive to this thread for quite a while. I'm not sure why people continue to get hooked into replying to him.

But presumably not d) retirees who are self-sufficient but unable to meet the UK's new income/savings requirements?

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It's going to be especially sad for those who are put in a position of choosing between keeping their family intact and returning to look after an ailing parent. And so short sighted in that that...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

The UK voted for a government that pledged to reduce immigration. So I'll ask you again, what evidence do you have that people support these high income limits and their consequences as a way of...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

So how do these statements support the contention that Brits are supportive of these new income limits and their consequences?

Then exclude the foreign national from benefits, as opposed to...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I have nothing against this concept. However, the income requirements will inevitably exclude many who are more than willing to do so.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Indeed. And I'd also like to see something to back up formula's contention in the first place.

The assumption that people under the proposed income levels are in the "entitled to" column is...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

None of this is a surprise, because the government's underlying goal really isn't about benefits, it's about reducing immigration. And going for non-EU family reunification is the easiest way to do...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

The question is what additional benefits can be claimed if the non-EU spouse is present compared to the British citizen being there on their own? As far as housing benefit goes, it seems no...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I agree, which is why I think there should be a bar on means-tested benefits as opposed to a very high income requirement.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

UK minimum wage is £6.19 per hour. That equates to approx £1050 a month for a 40 hour work week. Even with both partners working that comes to considerably less than the £25.5k needed for a couple...

People who are retired?

Anyway, from what I've read, over 50% of people who are working wouldn't meet the requirements.

Re: Theresa May wants minimum income of £25,700; £49,000 if you have 2 kids

Possibly. Of course, that might mean "retirement age" is different for savings from different countries that have different rules etc. I really doubt whether these nuances have been thought through.

Re: Theresa May wants minimum income of £25,700; £49,000 if you have 2 kids

Ok I see your point.

I did see this text as regards to defined-contribution plans:

So that at least tells us that defined-benefit retirement savings are disregarded prior to retirement...

Re: Theresa May wants minimum income of £25,700; £49,000 if you have 2 kids

Presumably one would be allowed to do an actuarial valuation of a defined-benefit pension. I don't see this distinction as being an issue.

Re: Theresa May wants minimum income of £25,700; £49,000 if you have 2 kids

Indeed. I've got to hope this policy gets challenged in court. It's morally and, hopefully, legally wrong.

I like the French model for healthcare, but let's not forget that France spends a significantly higher percentage of its GDP on healthcare than does Britain.
