Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Stealth (the hidden truth I was refering to) taxation is unnanounced raises. It includes things like the top rate tax band not moving with inflation/salaries. Another huge one, to the tune of...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

For a start ... Pension funds, PPP and PFI ... billions and billions and billions. Stealth tax hikes are a whole issue of their own.

I do agree there has been improvements in a number of things...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Gordon is too fond of telling expensive lies and hiding the truth for my liking. I don't trust him as far as I could throw him!

The rhetoric sounds refreshing, he's clearly in tune with at least...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

I didn't think we were arguing it was ... we we're criticising issues with the Office of the President and its election.

And in any case, representation is only one of the desired attributes of...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

That's what I meant about accountability. I know about checks and balances etc etc. The President is largely inaccessible. That's wrong, in any system imo. Still, spose it was summed up in...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Aye, twas your comment and Dear David that got me onto Question Time the program. Wednesday afternoons just wouldn't be the same on Capitol Hill with "real" question time.

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Got distracted sorry, one of those nights.

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Tony wasn't elected PM, we just explained that ;) .. But yes every system has its weaknesses.

Had to run off for the last of Dimbleby's series, How We Built Britain. It's been a BBC classic if...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

There are subtleties involved in that question that are very hard to explain to someone who doesnt know and hasnt experienced UK politics. However, primarily if the leader of the party is...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

This is one of the things I dont like in practice about US Politics. The President is "protected" and treated like our Queen because of the Head of State role and yet he should be as answerable as...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Firstly, usually the leader of the Party is known before the election. And secondly, they would have to win the next election as PM for that party to stay in power.

So, in practice you dont get...

Re: Differences between UK and USA culture/living

Hence, the electoral system is a tad borked.

No, he was none of the equivalents of impeached, or almost so. Whether he left in disgrace or not is a personal opinion. The press and public in general do not see it that way.

The next election...
