I can only recall ready meals tasting of hot water and chemicals. Obviously the exact taste is long gone, the burnt mouth can be recalled..

To be fair I think I might have taken the 'ready meal' tag a bit literally.
I served it up out of the box and it was only later I realized it still required cooking.

We bought a ready meal from Waitrose in Central London and it looked great, nice photos on the packaging, cost a lot, and tasted like crap.
