Re: Land of opportunity...

I've used Fed Ex quite a bit, and had lousy experiences with them, too. (I remember one particularly glorious incident when one package that was supposed to travel about 1,500 miles overnight was...

Re: Land of opportunity...

I don't think that anyone wants to eliminate that choice.

The point is that it's a bit OOT to make direct comparison between one service that is meant to serve everyone, and another niche service...

Re: Land of opportunity...

When it is possible to send a Fed Ex for 42 cents, we can all use it more often. Until then, the post office is just fine with me.

(And my post office provides great service. Really courteous...

Re: Land of opportunity...

I've dealt with various levels of government, both as a citizen and as a professional, and I'd say that it's a mixed bag. Some of them can be pretty awful, but on the whole, I think that they are...

Re: Land of opportunity...

If employees receive a tax credit, the insurers will simply respond by raising the premiums and taking most of the new free money for themselves. A credit is an indirect handout to the insurance...

Re: Land of opportunity...

I assume that you are referring to "public debt." As this table notes, the figures are all over the place.

Re: Land of opportunity...

I grew up here and carry the blue passport with the eagle without any shame, but I agree with the majority posting here that the US system sucks, too. I've seen plenty of examples of its failures...

Re: Land of opportunity...

The problem with this for the US would be that the insurers would not like a system that encourages a lot of opt outs. To push people to choose the optional private plan, insurers would lobby to...

Re: Land of opportunity...

A "plan," by definition, is a scheme for an insurer to avoid payment for certain items. Co-pays, deductibles, exclusions and the rest are all meant to push obligations back to the policyholder.

Re: Land of opportunity...

Insurance companies don't compete to serve sickly people, because they are inherently unprofitable. So the competition-free market rules do not apply to this situation.

The private system in its...

Re: Land of opportunity...

When the country ends up with health care reform (which I believe is inevitable, because business will increasingly clamor for it as its soaring costs make them uncompetitive in a global market), I...

Re: Land of opportunity...

A co-pay will cause people who can't pay to avoid treatment because they can't afford it.

Better solutions would be to raise the tax for everyone, which would allocate the costs toward higher...

Re: Land of opportunity...

In a system that makes sense, co-pays would be used to prevent abusers.

In the US system, they are used to bankrupt people and let them suffer. As is often the case, we can be a bit over-the-top,...

Re: Land of opportunity...

If the society was already paying for health care through taxes, then it would be redundant to charge for them twice. The taxes should have already covered the cost.

I believe in some modest use...

Re: Land of opportunity...

You talk about medication as if it's a luxury good that should only be available to those who prove themselves worthy. Even Tracy isn't saying this.

I can understand that if people want Porsches...

Re: Land of opportunity...

You've probably already figured this out, so apologies in advance for stating the obvious, but it comes down to this:

If you tell Americans that something is "socialistic" or anti-Christian, you...

Re: Land of opportunity...

FWIW, I've never partaken in the services of the NHS, but I did once see a private doctor in Gibraltar for a minor ailment.

I was horrified to find that I was able to get an immediate...

Honestly, among us, you are in need of the reality check. Medical expenses are the...
