The Smart is definitely not in your $5k budget.

You might consider an older Subaru. They lack glamor, but they tend to be durable.

I would tend to avoid VW's in the US. The Europeans like them, but they don't translate well here. For a reliable compact, price independent, Toyotas and Hondas are your best bet.

A Taurus is a full size, so not particularly small, if that's what you want. They do depreciate like rocks, though.

The better Japanese cars tend to be more reliable, but they hold their value,...
