Unfortunately if you tell them right at the beginning and then 2 years later you don't get accepted, they still have that knowledge that you WERE going to abandon them but someone else stopped it. ...

What's amusing for us is that in our small town a rumour started six years ago that we were moving to the U.S.A....

Me(us) too! Don't know what it is about that particular stage but I seem to be unable to think of anything else at the moment.

We got the request for medicals, police checks and residency fees...

Yes that's what I am trying to avoid. Limbo-land is bad enough as it is without everyone constantly reminding you that that is where you're stuck.

I think it is inevitable that people's attitudes...

At present it is only the younger members of the family who have been told and they are perfectly ok with it (unless it hasn't sunk in).

Did you tell them of your plans to emigrate before the application went in or at some point afterwards?

Telling them too soon can mean that the lengthy process can upset them more than it needs to...
