Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

A spin on a quote I once read.

"All religions are true, but for different values of truth"

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Why did you say this then?

If you're not saying the rules are wrong why even mention that some rules are good and some are bad? If you're saying the rules are not wrong why are you saying...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

But if you want to say the rules are wrong then you should do it before the event not after. The Libs were in power for 11 years up until 3 years ago and did not bother changing the rules. They...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Sure they do. Whining about the rules after the event doesn't make it wrong or unjust.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

It comes as part of the system Aus inherited from the UK. Same thing happened earlier this year when the lib-dems gave all their votes to the cons. Unless we have national electorates it's always...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Whereas the only reason the Libs would have got over the line was by aligning with the independents and that decision wasn't decided by the electorate.

Vive la difference!

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

There are no preference deals for the Reps. It's up to the individual voter to assign preferences.

Preference deals only apply to above line voting for the Senate.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Fair enough. I like the Oakshott proposal. Some of the stuff coming out of the independents is quite good. They certainly don't deserve the nutter tag attributed by some on here.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

I reckon both speaker and deputy speaker are outside the whip and refrain from voting (by convention).

Not sure Michael Martin was fully aware of that in the UK though.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

Traditionally, in the Westminster system, the speaker has the casting vote but by convention sides with the government of the day (regardless of their own party allegiance). I suspect that's the...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

I would personally like to make parties illegal. I think they kill democracy. However I can see that the US desire for this at this in the late 18C failed spectacularly quickly and parties formed...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

It's bizarre voting below the line. Out of 60, I ended up with One Nation at something like 49 and 50. I couldn't believe they ended up so high but below them were Fielding and his mates along...

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread

I think all systems throw out problem children from time to time. But I think the senate system should be improved. I would change it to a non-compulsory preference (i.e. you only number as far as...

We previously agreed that the senate voting system is pony but I wouldn't say it was dysfunctional. I'm quite happy with the Reps system. It's obviously not delivering instant gratification but...

The current situation is what...
