The point would be that only the interest on the investment mortgage would be deductible.

I can see that your extreme example could fall foul of the general anti-avoidance provision. I wasn't...

Did they say whether that was on top of the current 12.8% (of income above the tax free threshold) the government forces the employer to pay currently?

I agree - I wouldn't do it.

The only case I would do it would be if I had a mortgage on my own home. In this case I would increase the investment property mortgage to reduce my personal...

The idea is that the expenses for the house (mortgage, repairs, depreciation, etc...) are more than the rent. This loss can then be offset against your income.

In this situation the ATO shares...
