I agree with you there. The scalectrix driver (stiff arms on the steering wheel looking straight ahead) is a common sight on UK and Aussie roads.

The bit they missed out is that you're not supposed to manoeuvre when there is something there.

If people looked over their shoulders before chaning lanes (like motorcyclists do) then it would be no more dangerous than overtaking on the right.

One major safety difference on the high-speed roads (dual carriageways and motorways) is the right hand turn through the medium strip/central reservation. These have all but disappeared from UK...

You might find that this is actually legal where there are multiple lanes - it's definitely allowed in Victoria.
