I'm 48, so don't particularly want to hop between countries, and realistically given current family commitments, it could be near my retirement age before having the freedom to move again. Canada...

You can only compare your own relative costs, as there are so many variables involved.

I owned a 2,500 sq/ft home in a ski resort which cost as much to heat as my next home which was a 6,000 sq/ft...

I'm not a renter, but everyone pays council/property tax one way or the other - either directly or indirectly bundled in with your rent.

I'm not finding utility bills any more expensive in the UK...

I've recently moved back to the UK after 14 years in BC, and have found the cost of living here considerably less expensive so far. Of course exchange rates muddy the water, but I've not found...
