How are you stuck with them? Just don't buy one unless you really need one (for it's towing capacity, for example).

The difference in size of the fuel tank in my SUV and F150 is 10 litres. I wouldn't expect much difference in terms of explosion size once either was ignited. It's a lousy argument to base the choice...

More fool those that choose an SUV over a car and expect the SUV to stop/slow down in anywhere near the same distance in order to avoid a collision, or have the steering dynamics to be able to swerve...

Towing capacity and comparative frugality were the top reasons I purchased an M-class. 4WD's good for a slippy boat dock, but who's really going to off road with any degree of bravado in a $60k SUV?

The price premium, and additional servicing costs mean that unless you cover a lot of miles, it makes no sense to choose it over the gas engine.

Manufacturers don't, AFAIK, make any claims about whole of life enviro-friendliness. It'd be impossible to do so due to almost infinite variables about how the vehicle is used and maintained.

What leads you to think they're misleading? If they're all measured in the same controlled way they're at least comparable to each other.
