If you are returning from overseas, you have to prove that you have been in employment overseas that paid minimum £18,600 pa for at least the previous 6 months, plus you have to have proof of £16,000...

I've just been to the Dubai based UK Embassy. They don't have any visa department/staff there any more. They told me to call VFS, but I explained that they don't know much more than the common person...

I have Googled for more info on the Surinder Singh Route. There doesn't seem to be a set period (yet). 6 months seems to be the period which is described as being the minimum suggested time.
