You're not meant to do it that way, but it is significantly cheaper. The only problem is if they decide to call you for an interview.

If not, there's no real way they will know you didn't lodge it...

In theory, yes you can - it's pretty much what I did, though I was able to lodge the forms in person at the Post Office. A problem may arise if you are requested to attend for an interview however,...

Yes, the Aus standard for photos is very different to the UK one. I used a machine in Sainsbury's last year, and it conveniently guides you through the process. The Aus system seems to be a bit hit...

In theory, yes you can, though I don't know of anybody else that has tried it. If you do the send off thing, then you will need to get someone [of standing] in the UK to countersign the photographs...

I guess so, but even in you r case there's no reason that you couldn't have left on one passport, and arrived on another.

Well, my folks are willing and able to help out, and that was the last address I was registered at. I may give this a try - It seems like a complete polava though...
