Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

I don't think horses themselves are cheaper in Canada. They cost from $750 for a newly retired racehorse upwards, once you get into the tens of thousands then they may be purchased from Europe...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

I don't think this is true of Toronto. I concede though that the areas I know, areas affordable to two people with trades who had a couple of children, when I lived there, are likely now beyond the...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

One of my neighbours has a helicopter on a plinth in his garden. He used to fly them for Ontario Hydro so, while not a mechanic, he achieved what you're looking for (100 acres, large house, many...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Perhaps reasonably, perhaps not. If you're looking for a better material standard of living in a urban setting then I think that ship has sailed; the exchange rate means you can no longer sell your...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Well, in truth, I share a 99 not getting much of the flake. But making a 99 does feel like something a rich person would do, maybe even use Haagen-Dazs.

Oh no, I'm rich bitch, I want a 99, I eat a 99.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

99s.

It is extraordinarily expensive to obtain an ice cream cone and a flake here.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Raclette eating is always a fine idea but, be warned, I'm not keen on that drinking tea with it that they do in Switzerland. Besides, I read here that one cannot obtain decent tea in Canada.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Yes. Through four marriages (or equivalents), six houses, several horses and umpteen cars I've been going to the Olympic cheese stand. I'm in a rut in that regard.

But, the people are friendly and...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

In truth there's no real point, I'm a slave to the Olympic cheese stand.

Vaughan's not easier for me but that's interesting, where was it from?

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

It may be that I've assimilated but fifty bucks a fortnight doesn't seem an awful lot to spend on cheese and that gets a pound and a half of raclette, two 4" camemberts, a pound of seven year white...

I've never dithered long enough to find out if they'd insist.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

They don't export the real, sold on the side of the road by weird religionists, stuff. It's got no preservatives, no lot control, no verifiable manufacturing history. It just sits there next to the...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

I'm surprised it's even made in the UK, I wouldn't have thought it was reliably cold enough.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

I've never wanted either, anywhere, I'm just making fun of the idea that absolutely everything is more expensive in one country than the other. That's not true.

Generally these discussions...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Ice hockey sticks. Maple Syrup. Council Tax. Horses. Boats. Aeroplanes. Eating out. Marijuana.

How much is a lap dance in the UK?

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

I'm having some camembert right now and just nibbled on some goat gouda. I just don't get the complaint about the supply of cheese; what cheese can you not get?

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Mine's been falling steadily, it's under $500/month now. It's still my largest automotive cost though. The commuter car goes 30,000 miles a year. That's $100/week in petrol, $100/week in servicing...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

GBP200/week for the basic service it says. I didn't read on to see if there were other implied charges such as lessons or valet parking fees. $200/week is enough here to finance having an unbroke...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Here, indoor board goes from $400 to a couple of grand. Many barns will tie a lesson requirement to the board price. Facilities do matter but, at some point, it's the barn's connections that drive...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

We do ride in the winter, a couple of times a week in lessons, once or twice for practice. Costs here are about the same as in NS. It is possible to spend more, of course; we don't ride in an heated...

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Ah, ours are boarded too, we have paddocks but no indoor. I imagine everything equine is cheaper in Canada than the UK though it's all cheaper still in the US.

Re: Things that are cheaper in the UK vs Canada?

Much as I like NS, 40 mins out of Halifax is more akin to 40 minutes out of Aberdeen than it is akin to anywhere in Surrey. I'm surprised you're on a quarter acre; where do you keep your horse?
