Re: Groceries

If I care about the price of something, I buy it at Costco. If I'm in Loblaws it's because it's convenient. It's no longer convenient if one looks at the prices and points instead of just whizzing...

Re: Groceries

It will surprise no one that I'm completely slapdash about points collection, I just wave the card when I'm doing the ordinary shopping but don't target particular goods or days. Nonetheless, there's...

Re: Groceries

Everything seems normal here but then perhaps my shopping list is not the same as everyone else's shopping list. I wouldn't, for example, notice an absence of doughnuts or products intended for the...

Re: Groceries

I went to the shops today and it was another world compared to the last few weeks. No more social distancing, no more following the lines on the floor. Groups of hipsters clogging the spice aisles,...

Re: Groceries

Weed has always come with delivery in Canada. The convenience is one of the reasons that legal weed hasn't been able to compete successfully.

Re: Groceries

I'm eating Marmite cashews. I've never tried them before and expected the nuts to be crisp. Should they be soggy?

Re: Groceries

Tim and Heather's No Frills is a large, clean shop with hitching rails outside. I tend not to go in there as it caters for people who go to the grocer's by horse and cart. Accordingly, it has the...

Re: Groceries

The same organization owns the names but Loblaws stores belong to the chain, No Frills and Bulk Barn are franchise operations under that umbrella. I imagine this accounts for the variations in the No...

Re: Groceries

No Frills varies enormously from shop to shop, unlike Loblaws/Zehrs which is pretty much the same whichever one you go into. I recall being amazed at the No Frills in Shelburne (a small town north of...

Re: Groceries

No Frills stores differ enormously by location. The ones in small towns, e.g. Shelburne, Mount Forest, are clean with wide spaced aisles and fresh fruit and vegetables. The downside is that they...

Re: Groceries

If you were to go there you might see that there's a big Home Hardware store just south of them on highway 6. It has a huge newly built drive shed; a building with a roof and hitching posts that can...

Re: Groceries

A website? They truly arrive at work in a horse and cart. They do have an interact machine but it all goes better if you're carrying money.

Re: Groceries

Have you been to the St. Lawrence market? I don't think so.

If you don't want to go that way and fancy a ride into the country, J-Mar Custom Meats just north of Mount Forest is a Mennonite...

Re: Groceries

Loblaws don't keep the good Camembert, La Rustique, anymore so I go to Metro for, just, that. It's $10 for the cheese and $2 for the petrol.

Re: Groceries

I drove through Orangeville Ont. en route to the cheese shop where, in addition to the usual items, I got some Clos Du Berry, which was the cheese offered for tasting. It's "Cave Aged Goat Gouda"...

Re: Groceries

Also raita; just slice a cucumber, throw it in a bowl of yoghurt and smush it about a bit, add salt and pepper if you have any. Cooling and as authentic as chicken tikka masala.

Re: Groceries

Ooh wait, I am a penny pincher. Irish Breakfast Tea was discounted so I bought the maximum allowed. Not sure exactly how much it was or what it usually costs but, since I've economized, I'm going to...

Re: Groceries

Since you mention lamb, I was slightly surprised to see that Costco now sells whole lambs, hung but not formatted. I suspect this indicates an increasing population of middle eastern origin; people...
