Thanks for clarifying – yes, you're quite right, there is a residency requirement particular to British E-2s, which is a qualitative assessment looking at your overall ties to the UK

A foreign residence isn't required to demonstrate eligibility for E-2 status. You will, however, need to sign a letter expressing your intent to depart the U.S. upon expiration of your E status.
