Hmmm... maybe it's my hearing but I hear lon-ger-ree (soft g). Or maybe it's just my British friends all mispronounce it ;).

I often wonder about this sort of thing.

I find it very difficult to say Kay-tee instead of Kay-dee when addressing someone named Katie in Britain (I'm Canadian). It sounds and feels so wrong...

word: UK / Canada (west coast)
vitamin: vit-a-min / vIte-a-min
oregano: o-re-GAN-o / o-REG-gan-o
innovative: IN-ni-vit-tive / in-no-VATE-ive
butter:...
