I'm not sure I have lots of misconceptions - it's more that I don't have the knowledge I need, hence asking the questions.

Yes, you're correct - in the thread I raised in the Marriage Visa forum, I was advised exactly as you outlined. It's certainly a risk to continue working whilst the AoS is processing, but anecdotally...

Thanks very much for your response, penguinsix. That's a really good summary. I have already factored in the self-employment taxes of 15.3% although I believe I can deduct the employer aspect (7.65%)...
