Because much of it is brown, dry and inhospitable. The majority of people dont want to live in a dustbowl in the middle of nowhere.

I couldn't imagine living anywhere with traffic again, Brisbane used to drive me mad, awful drivers didn't help.

Yes I get what you are saying, it is almost always in the opposite direction for those people as the UK just offers so much more.
