Perhaps I am being naive. I have been thinking about this for some time. From a laymans terms Canada seems to have better long-term prospects than many westernised countries being that the economy...

The word backwater infers to me to be a slow, in the background/unseen (I assume worldwise), and to a degree recessive economy.
