Fitted them twice in 2 winters. Fiddly but a pair of marigolds go a long way to helping cold fingers fit the chains. On both occasions, they got me home when I'd have stuck without them.

This certainly isn't the case on the Autostrada del Brennero, where it's winter tyres or snow chains onboard (and obviously they must demonstrably fit your car and be certified by ISO/TUV etc.).

For what it's worth, some tests suggest winter tyres are more helpful than having 4-wheel drive.
