Yes the Mrs and I are both on this service. So far so good. Definitely there are cheaper options on the back of T-Mobile network (if you use a lot of data).

Sounds like a personal preference to me. I'd pay it off and get it over and done with. One less thing to think about going forward.

From memory that only works for something like 60 or 90 days until you need to use the phone in the UK again.

The major flaw is that you'll find most things in the US will ask for a cell number....

Can pick up a sim card from most grocery stores and pay for a month or whatever. Federal law means they have to let you port your number when you find a network that you like.
