Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Isn't this damp problem an issue with most, if not all, older Hungarian houses which were built without any damp course? I see it to some extent in my house and others around the village where the...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

I'm in the same boat hobgoblins, it means quite an investment up-front to lay the logs down for seasoning and in the meantime finding ready seasoned logs to burn immediately seems to be near...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Your house must be much better insulated than ours, I light the fire in the morning and from then I am feeding it constantly to maintain a comfortable temperature. Logs every 30 minutes or so and...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Thanks for the explanation Wolfi, of course in London the smog was caused by burning coal in open fires.

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

That sounds very attractive, economical to run and as well as no mess - no work in cutting and splitting logs!

If we were starting from scratch I would probably go that route, although my...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Thanks all, some useful info here.

It would seem from user experience quoted in above examples that gas is no more expensive than wood, but it's not an option for me as the cost of converting...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

All the Hungarians I talk to swear by logs and tell me that gas is very expensive. Is your heating bill comparable to mine?

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Yes Wolfi, that is what is troubling me - 80,000Ft per month is a big heating bill.
I wonder if the wood is not seasoned and with a high moisture content therefore making it inefficient?

My, so...

Re: Firewood/Heating costs

Thanks Jetsam, I have a chainsaw and axe so do cut some of my own timber. It's a lot of work though, so maybe a log splitter would make sense - what is the cost of these?

I also buy in ready...

Firewood/Heating costs

In my second winter now and still on something of a learning curve with my logburner as regards which fuel is most econimcal and/or best.

Like a lot of things I'm surprised how expensive firewood...
