I assume that your mother was married after 1.1.1949. So there was no such thing as "automatic" British citizenship - she must have applied for and received a Home Office certificate of British...

Your mother is a British citizen otherwise than by descent if she lived in the United Kingdom and became naturalised.

On the other hand if she was registered as a British citizen based on marriage...
