If anyone is interested I just recieved my daughters first passport in China in less than 2 weeks as opposed to about 6. He was the timeline:

Here in China interviews are conducted by the UK visa office. They have a member of staff who deals with UK passport applications and does the interviews. Should imagine same there in India now.

They should just need to see his ETD then issue you an exit / entry book. Then they will ask you to renounce his Chinese citizenship.
