As I said my potential wife picked up the certificate but she was not asked for identification for who she was, just for the details of the cert she was picking up. I am sure I could have asked them...

For a 'certificate of no impedance', contact your last council office in the UK and ask if they can issue you one. You will have to send them a copy of your divorce papers. I contacted them by phone,...
