Re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

One wonders if you couldn't have spared her indignation by quietly slipping her a few hundred euros from your surplus funds.;)

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

Things are never quite as black and white as they might appear. Bear in mind that the French state pension is significantly higher than the UK equivalent so it's arguable that the French government...

But not if they're only interested in reading the France forums.

Frankly I didn't even know this Europe forum existed until today. The issues I have been raising are specifically related to the...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

With respect I think there are two conversations, or at least two themes within the same conversation:

- The first is whether ex-pats should get the WFP at all. The UK government has decided that...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

Not true.

To avoid the tedium Cyrian has chosen to unsubscribe from this thread.

Nope. I am as entitled as you to express my opinion.

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

No, France is a special case.

Who, apart from the UK government, thinks that France has warmer winters than the UK?

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

The comparison is irrelevant. French state pensions are significantly higher than UK pensions (which are amongst the lowest in Europe) so French pensioners have less need to top up their pensions...

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

That's right because according to the British government Italy is colder than the UK. France, on the other hand, is warmer than the UK.

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

Apology accepted. It's always dangerous to make assumptions :)

Indeed but to be clear Labour announced last year that they want to remove WFP from the richest 5% of pensioners and the...

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

If the UK government had said "we'll axe the WFP for all ex-pats" then that's fine. My issue is the way in which they intend to apply the policy and as such UK citizens in France are clearly being...

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

Once again you are wrong! I don't live in Portugual although it's a country I love. I don't own a boat. I live on a pension. I have a tiny house in France (which has no mains water, gas or...

Re: End of Winter Fuel Allowance

Not really. The Early Day Motion was tabled just a few days ago. See Early day motion 695 - SOCIAL SECURITY - UK Parliament (http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/695)

There's an excellent article...

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

Look at what?

Well the UK Government has already devised such a system based on average winter temperatures of countries compared with the average winter temperature of south-west England.

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

No of course not but the withdrawal of WFP is based on temperature. The UK Government has cynically manipulated the figures insofar as they relate to mainland France.

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

There are plenty of UK citizens in France that need WFP just as much as UK citizens living in the UK. Who are you to say they don't?

I said that the principles were "fairness" and...

re: Winter Fuel Allowance - Europe pensioners and expats.

This is not about sympathy but about fairness and non-discrimination.

If you don't think those are principles worth upholding then that's fine, but why not start a thread about the benefits of...

The situation in France is quite different from Cyprus.

Only signed by 2 MPs so far. I have written to my MP requesting her to sign.

They'll tell you that the UK boundaries do not include overseas territories whereas the boundaries of France do.

It's closed. To be honest it came across as a bit of a rant and didn't really justify why it considered expats were being victimised other than the originators "belief" that withdrawal of the WFP was...

But it's most likely to be cancelled for those who are least likely to affect the outcome of a UK election.

Apparently only 20,000 expats are currently registered to vote in the UK. There's info...
