Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I thought I would clarify this.

I am fully retired and have been for 13 years now, no paid work at all. I receive both a qualified pension and a non-qualified SERPS pension from from my former...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I certainly hope you are correct. I will continue paying into SS after age 70. I intend to take SS at age 70 in 2 years, at which point I will have 28 years of contributions. If I can make 30 years...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I can see exactly where you are coming from and there are annuities in the USA that you can pay into using after-tax money then convert them to a monthly drawdown and the 1099-R each year will show a...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I agree, and if SS payments are due then they are well used to paying them directly into a UK bank, and at the best exchange rate you can get. My wife has been receiving SS payments for over a year...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

My wife answered No to that question as she never used the Totalization Agreement.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I really don’t know what the calculation is, how much each year of voluntary contributions reduces WEP and how long it will take to recover the amount paid, particularly if the contributions are at...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

My wife completed the following form and sent it to the FBU at the US Embassy with a copy of her NI contributions record, and they said that they would verify with the UK DWP.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I think max WEP is around $6k/year reduction in SS so it is definitely very significant.

Fortunately SS was not needed in our retirement planning, I always put zero in the calculators. More...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

For sure, if you have 30 years of SS contributions then no need to file the form or even consider WEP.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

3 years to go now before, at age 70, I start drawing my SS. It will be reduced by WEP but hopefully not by much as I will have 28 years of contributions by then. Because of the SERPS pension I...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

That was the same with myself and my wife. I had 30 years and my wife 31 so we both fell a little short of full pension.

I agree but am not sure of the exact timings.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

The voluntary payments I made were Class 3 after I had retired so that is the difference. Hopefully the timing will be acceptable to SSA, in that the years listed as self employment match years in...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Exactly.

I am retired and part of my income is an unqualified pension paid by my old US company and reported via a W-2 so I am still paying into SS with FICA taxes (no Medicare just SS payments)....
