Re: Exchange rate

I haven't done it for a while, but last time I did I recall being presently surprised that the in-bank rate was so good.

Somewhere like HSBC might be worth a look as they let you hold accounts in...

Re: Exchange rate

Maybe, but so very of much of this is down to consumer confidence being in denial isn't necessarily a bad thing. Debt (personal, provincial, Governmental) is in a whole different ballpark across the...

Re: Exchange rate

The Bank of Canada's latest report (yesterday, I believe) was forecasting the recession here being brutal, but relatively swift. It seems there is some optimism Canada, as one of the better placed in...

Re: Exchange rate

I'm an idiot for not porting all our CDN savings into USD when it was 1.10 to the CAD a few months back. Would have made 15% already with barely a few clicks of the mouse.

Sigh. I KNEW that...

Re: Exchange rate

I think the markets are pricing in the increased likelihood of a UK rate cut tomorrow.

It's pretty volatile at present, if you see a good spot rate on a day like yesterday it might be worth...

Re: Exchange rate

Oh yeah, we've no complaints, it was our choice to come here, and the wonderful view of the snowy mountains this morning was priceless!

Re: Exchange rate

That's a lovely theory but alas for us it'll come too late :frown:

Re: Exchange rate

Yeah, I've split it into four exchanges since late summer, I have one left and am currently averaging 2.04. I had to move a load last week as we're (hopefully) going to be completing on a property...

Re: Exchange rate

Well up into the 2.04's today, presumably on the news that OPEC might up production - oil is down a bit as a result.

Entirely predictable of course, I moved some money across last week which is...

Re: Exchange rate

Well, I just moved approx. one third of our home sale proceeds across @ 1.9974, which was as close to the magic 2.000 as I could get them with the interbank rates at about 2.007.

The rates are up...

Re: Exchange rate

Well, to flog this old horse yet again, just this very second I've seen the pound nosing over $2.00 CDN on the interbank rates, most welcome for those still with money to move / waiting on house...

Re: Exchange rate

...which has knocked the rate up into the 1.97s as a drop was already half priced in.

Might move some over tomorrow.

Re: Exchange rate

(from Yahoo Finance (http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/07112007/325/sterling-hits-26-year-high.html))

Fingers crossed. Up into the heady heights of $1.93 today.

Mind if, if they do chop the rates it'll...

Re: Exchange rate

Into the 1.90x range then.

What is fueling this rapid change - FX traders or the oil price?

I am now thinking, again, of moving money into USD, with the logic that although Canada might not...

Re: Exchange rate

It's in the 1.92's?

Stuff this, think we might forget buying a place altogether and leave the money under the mattress in the UK.

Re: Exchange rate

Well, it's meant us being limited to one car rather than two. I guess that's not the end of the world and hey, we're here.

At least we're not moving US dollars!

Re: Exchange rate

I walked into HBSC in Vancouver today with a crisp twenty pound note and walked out with forty Canadian dollars and fifty cents.

Re: Exchange rate

Indeed.

Something of minor interest -

Sterling: US Dollar, approx 1:2.04
Sterling: Canadian Dollar, approx 1:1.98
Canadian Dollar: US Dollar, approx 1:1.02

My maths may be a bit shaky...

Re: Exchange rate

Re: Exchange rate

I'm quite glad I didn't buy a shedload of US dollars a couple of months back when I was pondering it as a end-up-with-more-loonies-in-the-long-run strategy.

Re: Exchange rate

At first attempt, I got them up to 2.1225.

Going to call back in a bit if the interbank rate is still in the mid 14s and attempt 2.125.

It's only a few Canadian notes difference, but they're...

Re: Exchange rate

If the interbank rate is 2.14 what am I liable to be able to wring out of HIFX as a spot rate do you reckon (presuming they'll offer me about 2.12)?

2.125? 2.13?

Re: Exchange rate

Something seems to be going on today anyway, back up toward the $2.15s for the loonie.

And the US dollar goes from bad to worse... over $2.05 this morning!
