I experienced the same. A lot of Mexicans dont like people from USA as some of them think they are superior more so now with Trump.

Gordon if you are still thinking of Mexico have a look at Yucatan ,lots of British and mainly Canadian and US retirees in the main city Merida. Very peaceful place very little crime and no drug...
