It seems that an IDP is an Avis requirement for a Saudi license.

yeah, I know all this.

I'm just wondering why a woman working as an Avis customer service rep doesn't... and can't lay her hands on any of the right documentation to back up her spurious claims....

KSA has mostly Arabic but the key points are in English so it should be acceptable as it's easily seen as valid in English.

Avis said that to rent in the UK on a Saudi license they would require me to have an IDP. Just goes to show that the rental companies themselves have no clue what the rules are.

while I can rejoice that renewal is fine, it seems that none of us can rent a car with valid insurance in the UK on our UK licenses according to info here and that rather garbled response from Avis...

I never got a photocard when they were introduced and continue to drive on the paper license I was issued and which is valid until my 70th birthday and still has the same, valid, UK address on it.

I've got a paper license. Never got the photocard and have no intention of doing so. So my license is valid until I'm 70 which is a fair way away. Never had any hassles renting in the UK with it and...

AFAIK, you can't renew it legally if it expires while you are living outside the UK. DVLA will only renew licenses based on a UK residential address, which you don't have.

That was the case a year...
