There's no hard and fast rule about how many lines of credit or for how long - that's just typical BoA bollocks, presenting you with hurdles to jump that may not be necessary.

We avoided that through an 80-10-10 loan, with the extra 10% on a slightly higher interest rate than the 80%.

Good point about the down payment - we needed at least 10% down for anyone to even talk to us, and this was in the days of Zero-down mortgages and all that other sub-prime shenanigans!

Back in 2004 we got a mortgage after only 11 months in the US. We already had a credit card for all 9 of those months, thanks to our friendly Credit Union.

I know things have changed completely...
