"Terribly cold" is an over exaggeration. It's never "terribly cold" anywhere in the Bay Area. It is true that during the summer months SF can be 10-15c colder than the Peninsula but we are talking...

For places with a buzz that aren't SF proper you can consider Palo Alto, Mountain View, Redwood City and San Carlos. Fair warning: none of these places have anywhere near the kind of buzzy city feel...
