Are you talking line to line, or line to ground fault ? Line to line, a single protective element works, line to ground you need a DP MCB, rated at the fault current of the original...

So you wire a US 220V 30A outlet to a British 13A socket, and use the 13A plug. Now you have a pretty analogous arrangement to a standard UK ring.
