It seems a knee-jerk one size fits all instruction. For a house in a forested area, it would make perfect sense.

I'm having the same thoughts; if taken literally, I have to kill my big palms and my entire fruit orchard, even though I'm located in the middle of a large area of flat empty agricultural land.
