The 12 month 1/6 rule has long gone. You have to be out for the full tax year now and become non-resident. If you are out for a full tax year and for part of the previous and following tax year then...

It makes no difference where your salary is paid. Obviously you will still have to satisfy the HMRC rules on residency etc. You may still be liable for class 1 NI contributions though !
